Canada Soccer has confirmed that Stephen Eustaquio’s shoulder injury is not considered serious, easing a major concern for the national team. The vice-captain sustained the knock in the 40th minute of Tuesday’s 1-0 friendly loss to the United States at Allianz Field.
The 29-year-old midfielder was hurt following a challenge by American attacker Gio Reyna. Eustaquio played on until halftime, when head coach Jesse Marsch substituted him for Mathieu Choinière. He underwent an X-ray in Minnesota on Tuesday night before returning to his club, Swansea City, for further assessment.
Canada Soccer said in a statement that "the injury Stephen Eustaquio sustained in Tuesday’s 1-0 friendly loss to the United States does not appear to be serious after the Swansea midfielder underwent an X-ray."
Eustaquio had joined the camp late after getting married but featured in all three of Canada’s recent matches. The team's form reads two wins and one loss from its last three outings, with victories over Chile and Peru preceding the narrow defeat to the USA. Jacob Shaffelburg scored both goals in the 2-0 win against Peru.
With the injury scare now subsiding, Eustaquio is expected to be available for selection when Canada resumes action in a World Cup qualifier away to Guatemala on November 13.
