Canada's men's national team were beaten 1-0 by the United States in a friendly international on Tuesday. Justin Ellis scored the only goal in the 29th minute at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The teenage Orlando City striker netted his second international goal, finishing a move assisted by Alexander Freeman. The result leaves Canada with three wins and two losses in their last five matches, a sequence that includes a 2-0 win over Peru last week.
How the match unfolded
Ellis broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark, capitalising on a rare clear chance. Canada's best opportunity came from a Luc de Fougerolles free-kick that forced a save from US goalkeeper Brian Schwake before hitting the crossbar. Both sides were physical, with Canada's Tani Oluwaseyi and Jonathan David receiving yellow cards.
Despite having 47% possession and forcing eight corners to the USA's four, Canada managed only three shots on target from six attempts. The American defense, marshalled by captain Chris Richards, held firm for a second consecutive clean sheet.
The match concludes Canada's October window. The team's next scheduled fixtures are in the November FIFA window, where they will look to build on recent performances.
For Mauricio Pochettino's US side, the focus shifts to the Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals against Haiti in November. Canada will now regroup and analyse this performance ahead of their next camp.
