Canada's star player Alphonso Davies didn't make his 2026 FIFA World Cup debut against Switzerland on Wednesday.
What happened?
The 25-year-old wing back was an unused sub for the third consecutive FIFA World Cup match. Canada coach Jesse Marsch explained that Davies wasn't ready to play. Marsch said he used Davies as a decoy to distract the Swiss team.
Why it matters for Canada
Davies suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in early May. He was unable to resume training with Canada until just this week. Marsch said Davies will be ready to play on Sunday.
What comes next?
Canada had a chance to win Group B on Wednesday afternoon with either a win or a draw against the Swiss side. But they lost and will now head to Los Angeles to face the runner-up of Group A. Marsch said his Canadian side needs to understand how to handle opponents like Switzerland better. | Stat | Value | | --- | --- | | Next match | June 28 | | Opponent | South Korea or Czechia | | Time | 3 p.m. EDT (12 p.m. PDT) | Canada's goal remains the same, to electrify the nation. Marsch said they still have a massive opportunity ahead of them, even though it'll be from Los Angeles.
